Taboola Data Reveals Millions of Brits Turn to Martin Lewis Amid Benefits Cuts

Millions of Brits are turning to personal finance guru Martin Lewis amid fears around welfare spending overhaul, readership data from Taboola’s network of publishers indicates.

On Tuesday, Work and Pensions secretary Liz Kendall announced her intention to significantly reduce welfare expenditure in order to fix Britain’s “broken benefits system.”

Over the last week, articles written by or about Martin Lewis attracted over 3 million page views across Taboola’s publisher network – double the previous week. Views for Lewis were six times higher than those for Liz Kendall during the same period, indicating that readers are more concerned about how the new measures will affect their own finances than the politics behind the decision.

The Government’s plans involve limiting disability payments and changing the rules around the health-related aspect of universal credit. The measures mean that as many as 1.2 million Brits will lose their benefits.

In the 24 hours following the speech, news articles mentioning the Department for Work and Pensions received 1.2 million views. In the week leading up to the announcement, the topic generated more than 5.4 million views, making it the most read-about topic for the British public during this period.

Dave Struzzi, communications lead at Taboola, said: “With the government’s announcement of the biggest cuts to UK social security in a decade, we’re seeing millions turn to Martin Lewis for advice. We’re likely to continue seeing a surge in page views for articles around personal finance and disability benefits over the coming weeks, as those affected turn to advice articles on their trusted news platforms to plan for the future.”
