News in brief: South Australia Bans Junk Food Ads on Public Transport; WWE Raw Hits Netflix; Amazon Plans Expansion into UK Broadband

South Australia Bans Junk Food Ads on Public Transport

The government of South Australia has introduced a ban prohibiting junk food ads on public transport, including buses, trains and trams. The ban is part of an effort to tackle obesity, which has overtaken tobacco as the leading risk factor contributing to disease in the country. Content advertising products such as chocolate, sweets, deserts, soft drinks and chips will be banned from 1st July 2025. According to data from Cancer Council SA, almost 80% of food and drink ads on buses in the region promote unhealthy food and drinks.

WWE Raw Hits Netflix

WWE Raw has officially arrived on Netflix, a year after news broke that the streaming giant had won rights to its content for the next decade. The deal had closed at over USD$5bn (£3.9bn). The show’s Monday night debut on Netflix yesterday marks its first time leaving linear TV, now only available for viewing on the streaming platform. Viewers need a Netflix subscription to watch the content; those signed up to any subscription tier are able to watch.

Amazon Plans Expansion into UK Broadband

Amazon is pushing forward with its plans to launch a broadband service in the UK through its satellite operation, Project Kuiper, reports the FT. Although not yet operational, Kuiper expects to begin deploying the satellite in early 2025. It intends to roll out the broadband service later this year. However, the final decision to grant Kuiper’s license to provide broadband services across the UK is still pending, with approval needed from Ofcom, the UK communications regulator. On Sunday, Ofcom stated that it was still considering the application. The project can be seen as an attempt to take on Elon Musk’s Starlink.
