The Stack: UK Gov Addresses Developers’ AI Training Rights and Introduces New Online Safety Regulations for Big Tech

This week on The Stack: Latest ad tech news in the UK; Today’s MadTech Daily

This week, we saw the UK government take steps to begin addressing the need for regulation around what content AI developers should be allowed to use when training their models. A consultation, which will be open until 25th February 2025, was launched. It proposed “introducing an exception to copyright law for AI training for commercial purposes”. Creatives have since rejected the idea – you can hear more about this on today's MadTech Daily episode.

The UK government also introduced new online safety regulations, forcing tech firms to take action against illegal activity on their platforms. Media regulator Ofcom published its first-edition codes of practice and guidance for tackling illegal harms on Monday.

In other UK-related news, Temu was named the most downloaded iPhone app of 2024. Additionally, Barb’s Advanced Campaign Hub planning tool was found to be overestimating broadcaster reach by an average of 40%
