This week, Google won an appeal against an antitrust fine of €1.5bn (£1.26bn) from the EU. The fine was a result of a case which began in 2019, accusing Google of imposing anti-competitive restrictions on third-party websites between 2006 and 2016. Meanwhile, industry attention remains fixed on Google’s ad stack case against the DOJ.

Google wasn’t the only giant involved in legal action this week: TikTok’s court case against the US began on the 16th September, fighting against the law which forces it to either be divested from its parent company ByteDance by the 19th January 2025, or be banned in the country. TikTok has pushed back against the idea that the app is controlled by the Chinese government.

Meanwhile, the UK government took action against junk food ads. The government announced the introduction of legislation which will ban junk food ads from appearing on TV before 9pm, as well as fully banning them online.

Changes have also been occurring for Apple users within the EU. On 16th September, Apple began allowing third-party app stores for iPads within the region. The change was announced in tandem with the latest iPad operating system release.
