Google Shakes Up Search Landscape; This Week’s Data and Streaming Partnerships; Could Canada Also Ban TikTok?

This week on The Stack: Google Shakes Up Search Landscape; This Week’s Data and Streaming Partnerships; Could Canada Also Ban TikTok? Plus today's episode of the MadTech Daily.

Last week, Google shook up the search landscape with the launch of its AI Overviews. This week, the tech giant announced it will be testing ads on the new feature in a move to boost its ad business. Advertisers will get the opportunity to appear in the section under a ‘sponsored’ label, if they are relevant to the query or information provided in the Overview.

Big deals also featured in our digest news this week: first, OpenAI inked a data deal with Reddit. The AI leader will use the social platform’s data to train ChatGPT, as well as other new products. And what does Reddit get out of the deal? The social platform will be able to bring new AI-powered features to its users. Second, Channel 4 teamed up with YouTube for the 2024 Paralympic Games: the broadcaster will stream every televised moment of sport this summer on its YouTube Channel.

As the TikTok ban looms in the US, Canada appears to be swaying in a similar direction. The head of Canada’s intelligence agency has advised Canadians not to use the video platform over the same security concerns which led to the US passing the ban-or-divest bill. TikTok maintains that the concerns are unsupported by evidence. With several lawsuits having been filed against the US government for breaching freedom of speech, it’s unclear how the situation will play out.
