On today’s news digest: OpenAI Inks Data Deal with Reddit; Sony Warns AI Giants over Use of its Artists; Amazon Prime Video Becomes US’ Biggest Ad-Supported Streaming Platform
OpenAI has struck another deal, this time with social giant Reddit. The AI leader will use Reddit’s data to train its ChatGPT and other new products. It will gain access to Reddit’s Data API, through which it will be able to harness the platform’s “real-time, structured, unique content” – users’ posts and replies. The partnership will also enable the social platform to bring new AI-powered features to its users. Additionally, OpenAI will become a Reddit advertising partner.
In the space where AI and music intersect, Sony is warning global tech and streamers over AI use of its artists. Sony Music has sent letters to over 700 AI developers and music streaming services globally (including OpenAI, Microsoft and Google) prohibiting AI developers from using its music. In addition, it highlights that Sony opts out of any text or data mining of its content for any purposes including training AI systems. The music group is also sending a separate letter to streaming platforms, suggesting that they adopt “best practice” measures with the aim of protecting artists and songwriters from AI developers. This letter also requests them to update their terms of service to explicitly state that mining and training on its content is not permitted.
Amazon Prime Video has become the US’ largest ad-supported streaming platform, the tech titan announced. The service has an average ad-supported reach of 115 million monthly users just in the US, reported SVP of Prime Video, Mike Hopkins. To draw a comparison with other major players in the streaming landscape, Netflix reported having 23 million monthly active users worldwide on its ad tier earlier this year.
