On today’s news digest: Google Unveils New Search; Netflix to Broadcast Christmas NFL; TikTok Creators Sue Ban Bill
Google has unveiled a revamped, AI-enhanced version of its Search. AI Overviews will provide AI-generated answers which appear at the top of a user’s results page. They will be able to help answer increasingly complex questions: “Rather than breaking your question into multiple searches, you can ask your most complex questions, with all the nuances and caveats you have in mind, all in one go”, Google explains. The AI-powered feature will be available to all US users from this week (for English queries). Google says it will be rolled out soon in other countries, expecting to bring it to over a billion people by the end of the year. Google Search will also incorporate new planning capabilities which can customise desired adjustments to its results. Results will also be AI-organised when users search for inspiration, such as for recipes or music. This move marks a dramatic shift in the world’s leading search engine, as Google attempts to gain ground in the AI race.
In the streaming landscape, Netflix has struck a deal with the NFL to stream their marquee games on Christmas Day. The games will be streamed on the platform exclusively. The deal includes three seasons: Netflix will also stream at least one holiday game in 2025 and 2026. This marks the streaming giant’s first partnership with a professional sports league.
With the clock Tik-ing away ByteDance’s stipulated deadline to sell TikTok or face a ban in the US, several creators on the platform are taking the matter into their own hands. Following the lawsuit brought against the US government by the video platform, eight creators have decided to file their own suits against the bill. The creators claim that the ban would strip them of their livelihoods and creative outlets. Like the video platform’s own lawsuit, the creators’ suits lean on the freedom of speech rights of the First Amendment.
