This week on The Stack: TikTok Files Lawsuit Against US Gov; AI Forges Publisher Group Partnership; OpenAI Releases Deepfake Detector, plus: today's episode of the MadTech Daily Podcast.
Another week, another lawsuit – and quite a major one: TikTok and parent company ByteDance have filed a lawsuit against the US government over the bill passed which will see the video giant banned in the country unless divested by January 2025. TikTok claims that the bill is unconstitutional and breaches the rights of US citizens.
Big moves have been made in the AI ambit this week too – OpenAI forged a partnership with publisher group Dotdash Meredith, the publisher of magazines such as People and InStyle. Through the deal, the publisher group will license its content to OpenAI, while using their AI models for ad-targeting.
OpenAI also made headlines for releasing a deepfake detector tool. With elections approaching and concerns over AI-created disinformation growing, the tool is designed to detect content made by its AI image generator, DALL-E 3. However, the tool has not been designed to be able to detect images created by other leading AI image generators. OpenAI acknowledged that further efforts are needed to tackle deepfakes in the coming months and years.
