This week on The Stack: TikTok Lite App Which Pays Users to Watch Videos Under EU Scrutiny; Taylor Swift Back On TikTok; UK Drafting AI Regulations
TikTok made waves in this week’s digest news. Firstly, Taylor Swift made a return to the platform just in time for the launch of her new album on the 19th April. This followed a royalties dispute with Universal Music which resulted in TikTok pulling the music group’s vast catalogue of music from the app. Secondly, TikTok Lite, the video giant’s new rewards app which has so far launched in France and Spain, came under fire from the European Commission (EC). Over concerns about the health of users and the protection of minors, the EC has requested to see the app's risk assessment.
In the UK, policy officials have started drafting regulations to limit the potential harms caused by AI, although no bills are imminent yet. Meanwhile in the APAC region, Australia’s out-of-home advertising saw significant growth, and OpenAI opened a new office in Japan’s capital.
