80% of Consumers Would Prefer More Ads Over Payment; TikTok Completes Deal for Indonesia’s Top Ecommerce Platform; Microsoft Reports 33% Profit Rise

On today’s ExchangeWire digest: 80% of Consumers Would Prefer More Ads Over Payment; TikTok Completes Deal for Indonesia’s Top Ecommerce Platform; Microsoft Reports 33% Profit Rise

Almost 80% of consumer respondents would prefer to see more ads over having to pay for accessing apps/websites, according to IAB’s new research investigating consumer privacy and the ad-supported internet. The findings reveal that 90% of consumers prefer personalised ads, although almost half (49%) of respondents still believe websites/apps do not provide enough information regarding how their data is being used. The study also reveals that Gen Z value the ad-supported internet almost twice as much as Boomers.

TikTok has completed its deal to take control of GoTo, Indonesia’s biggest ecommerce platform, following the initial agreement last December. Indonesia had previously banned online shopping on social media in order to protect smaller merchants and consumer privacy. The deal will facilitate the social media giant’s return to Indonesia’s online shopping market.

Microsoft has reported a 33% rise in profit, with its revenue up 18% in the latest quarter. Last week, the tech giant announced surpassing USD$3tn (£2.3tn) in market valuation. Investors are looking out for signs which will indicate that the tech giant is profiting from AI, following its investment of billions of dollars in OpenAI. Microsoft told its investors AI would not start producing meaningful results until this year.
