In today’s ExchangeWire digest: Tech giants funnel billions into cloud capacity for AI push; Elon Musk releases AI chatbot ‘Grok’; Google Play update shows security of apps.

Tech giants funnel billions into cloud capacity for AI push

The big tech players dominating the global cloud market have been boosting investment in computing infrastructure. Executives have reported that a significant portion of capital spending is going towards generative AI systems. Bank of America analysts have predicted that the collective cloud-related capital expenditure of Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft will rise by 22% in 2024 to reach USD$116bn (~ £804 bn).

Elon Musk releases AI chatbot ‘Grok’

Elon Musk’s start-up xAI has announced the release of its first AI model, AI chatbot ‘Grok’, integrated with X (formerly Twitter). Musk has revealed that the new AI system will have real time access to information from X, claiming this will give Grok a considerable advantage over similar models which rely on older archives of internet data. After it completes the planned period of training, the chatbot will be available to subscribers of the app’s Premium+ service.

In hopes to stand out from the competition, Musk has also emphasised that the chatbot “loves sarcasm” and responds with “a little humour”.

Google Play update shows security of apps

Google Play now has a new way to show users if apps are secure. Certain categories on the Google Play store will now display a banner which will help users to identify whether an app is trustworthy. In a blog post, Google reported that the banners will show users the “Independent security review” badge which was introduced last year. The presence of this badge will signify that an app has undergone independent audits to verify compliance with the OWASP global security standard.
