The Stack: Google Settles Location Data Lawsuit; Meta’s Targeting of Facebook Users Illegal in EU

This week: Google agrees to settle location data lawsuit in Washington D.C, Meta’s ad targeting model deemed illegal by EU…

New year, new me? Not for Google or Meta, apparently. This week, both tech giants contended with the hangovers of 2022’s legal troubles, with Google agreeing to pay USD$9.5m (~£7.9m) and change its practices to settle a location data tracking lawsuit in Washington D.C. Meta also felt the heat this week, with the EU concluding that the company’s legal justification for targeting Facebook users with personalised ads violated EU laws. Guess the party’s well and truly over.

For other big players in ad tech, however, 2023 began on a far more optimistic note: Shopify launched ‘Audiences’ to target users of the world’s largest advertising platforms, potentially offering a viable workaround of Apple’s privacy crackdown. Meanwhile, Microsoft contemplated adding ChatGPT to its Bing search engine to lure users away from rival directories.
